​How We Fixed the Flying Insect Problem on Our Cast Film Line?

A few weeks back, Xiamen Yuhong Plastic got a couple of customer complaints — tiny dark specks on the film surface. We traced it back to the winding section. Night shift, lights on, mosquitoes and little flying bugs get attracted, and at a cast line's speed they don't stand a chance — they get pulled straight into the roll.

So we did a retrofit. Around the finished-roll area of our cast film line, we put up curtain-style insect screen enclosures. Basically a physical barrier: high-density stainless steel mesh on the fixed parts, and hanging curtain panels on the operator side. Bugs stay out, film stays clean, and the rolls going out the door are a lot more consistent now.

What pushed us to act

The complaints themselves weren't huge in number, but once QC flagged the pattern, we didn't sit on it. Quality team went in first, confirmed the root cause (night-shift lighting + high-speed film = bug magnet), and within 72 hours we had an emergency fix running while the longer-term enclosure design was already being drafted. Production, tech, and quality people were all on the same small task force — no "forming a dedicated rectification team" PowerPoint, just people figuring it out.

Why the curtain-style screen worked for us

We looked at a few options — full acrylic enclosures, sticky traps, UV lamps — but most either cooked the winding area or got in the way of roll changes. The curtain-screen setup landed in a sweet spot:

Mesh density matters. We went with fine stainless steel (tight enough for mosquitoes, not so tight it traps heat). The winding zone already runs warm; you don't want another blanket over it.

Curtains, not doors. Operators need to get in there constantly — swap rolls, thread film, check tension. The front panels hang like strips, lift them and you're in. Let go and they fall back. No latch, no delay, no one complaining that "the bug cage slows me down."

No line mods. The frames bolt onto the floor/equipment base around the winding station. Didn't touch the actual cast line, so downtime was a non-issue.

Washable. Screens come off, get rinsed, go back on. Not sexy, but it matters three months in when dust builds up.

Not just the screens

The screens are the visible part, but we also went after the rest of the chain — re-meshed the workshop windows, shifted some light positions in the winding bay so the glow isn't pulling bugs toward the film, and cleaned out a few stagnant-drain spots we'd ignored too long. Source reduction + end interception, as the internal report puts it.

One of our shift supervisors put it plainer: "If a customer sees a dead mosquito in the roll, they don't care what our ISO cert says." Fair point. So we're keeping the spend going — environment, process control, testing — and seeing where else the line's vulnerable before a customer has to tell us.

Going forward

We'll keep tinkering. Next on the list is airflow — the enclosure traps some heat, so we're testing a low-speed extraction above the winding head to see if we can drop the temperature a couple degrees without sucking bugs back in.
